World Humanitarian Day
17 August 2017
Every day, humanitarian aid workers stand on the front lines of war and disaster, braving tremendous dangers and difficulties to deliver assistance to those who need it most. World Humanitarian Day, which takes place on 19th August, is an opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe, and to recognise those who face danger and adversity to help others.
This year, the UN and its partners are advocating for the protection of civilians, aid workers and all those affected by conflict. World Humanitarian Day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 2008 and was first observed in August 2009. The date was designated to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.
On World Humanitarian Day, Cigna honours volunteers worldwide who help people in need. Have you considered volunteering? Research shows there’s a strong link between volunteering and health.
